Ann Burton was born in Amsterdam on March 4, 1933. From early on her considerable interest in singing was helped along by the music of Tin-Pan-Alley, as sung by Doris Day - her first influence. Later on in her career, Billie Holiday became her roll model. Her singing could be described as lyrical and swinging with a healthy touch of vulnerability.

Recorded live at Nick Vollebregt's Jazz Cafe in Laren. A metaphoric description of Anne's singing -by John J. Vis- characterizes her as a small lantern with a lovely light. The Rob Agerbeek Trio with the vitality of Harry Emmery -bass-, and the swinging Frits Landesbergen on drums plus the intuitive and subtle piano of Rob gives this CD a freshness that belies the fact that it was made years ago.

One of the abiding qualities of the improvising art of jazz is that it never sets generational barriers. Thus, on this CD we find guitarist Axel Hagen,1963, combining naturally and effortlessly with pianist Frans Elsen, 1934, while in the rhythm section a similar age span exists between drummer Peter Kahlenborn, 1963, and Jacques Schols, 1935.

The album possesses all the virtues of traditional jazz: swinging improvisations, based on standard material; Cole Porter songs in this case. At the time of this recording, both Povel and Overgaauw taught the craft to dozens of future high-profile musicians at various conservatories, and did their share of studio work. The concert was recorded in front of a small but attentive audience in the intimate Pinehill Studio. It's music without trendy licks, virtuoso tricks and easy solutions. It's just music, good music, delivered with a lot of heart.

After his retirement in the early 90s, Geller blossomed again as a jazz soloist, performing all over Europe and visiting the United States once in a while. This record finds him in a duo with the Dutch Professor Bop, Rein de Graaff. A pianist with an impeccable timing an an exquisite choice of chords, who accompanied countless visiting American and local musicians.

Listening to these records nearley sixteen years later brings back fond memoires of Hod and Jon having a ball -that went on loooong after the gig was over-. For weeks after the gig Jon kept calling me about how much he had loved the band and how much it had meant to him. I am glad that this music has finally become available. It represents the regrettably belated and only meeting of two jazz greats that were a perfect match. - Hans Mantel
