Fado expresses deep pain in powerful varieties of pleasure and joy. For more than half a century, the voice of Amalia Rodrigues embodied those qualities, bringing fado from Lisbon to the world.

This CD presents the 20 greatest hits by virtuoso bandoneonist and controversial tango composer Astor Piazolla. Nonino, Verano Poteno, Las Ciudades, Malena, Tierrita, Adios Nonino, Contabajeando, Guitarrazo a.o.

Piazzolla's oeuvre revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style termed nuevo tango, incorporating elements from jazz and classical music. An excellent bandoneonist, he regularly performed his own compositions with different ensembles.

One of the recent examples of the tango nuevo music is the incorporation of jazz and classical music into tango music. The most important composer of this style is Astor Piazzolla, who revolutionized tango by introducing new instruments - e.g. saxophone, electric guitar- and new forms of harmonic and melodic structures into the traditional tango ensemble. This set includes Picasso, Tres Minutos Con La Realidad, Lo Que Vendra, a.o.

Astor Piazzolla´s fusion of the tango with elements of jazz and classical music, what he termed tango nuevo, caused traditionalists to foam at the mouth. His is tough, defiant music, though it can also be elegantly graceful, tenderly intimate or simply, sweetly sentimental. These excellent arrangements of some of Piazzolla´s most affecting pieces include Verano porteno, Milonga de la anunciacion, Oblivion, Libertango, Michelangelo´70, and Finale.

The Jewish heritage, as represented by Benedict Silberman's Hava Nagila and Other Jewish Memories, is steeped in a rich tradition of song. Tunes in this collection can be traced back as far as the 16th century,
originating as Badchen songs.
