This soundtrack is performed by a Miles Davis-fronted European band for the movie Ascenseur pour l'echafaud by Louis Malle. With slow-walking beats and muted, slithering horn lines, miming the characters on the screen and underlining their emotions, this music helped define the sound of film noir. Miles Davis' improvisations gloriously burst forth as if if pouring from the cafes and radios.

The first successful musical penned by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, Brigadoon was inspired by the German story of Germelshausen by Friedrich Gerstacker. The film told the true story of a teenage girl's battle with drug addiction, a theme that David Bowie felt strongly enough about to give permission for his songs to be used and for him to contribute a cameo appearance, as himself, in a stunning performance of Station to Station.
