John Adams is perhaps America's most celebrated composer, one who turns world events such as Nixon's visit to China or the development of the atomic bomb into opera, and the one whom the New York Philharmonic commissioned to commemorate 9-11. He has moved far from his minimalist roots towards a more Romantic harmonic sensibility: both can be heard on this disc.

The music of Thomas Ades taps into the spirit of our restless times with unquiet brilliance and an uncompromising vigour evident throughout this survey of works written in the 1990s. From the wild orchestration of a Madness song -Cardiac Arrest- to his alarmingly prescient vision of a country laid waste -America-, via French Baroque manners -Les Baricades misterieuses- and a diatribe against a grand old man -Brahms-, Ades is ever his own man.

This survey of Ades's early works for small forces rejoices in a compositional voice of percocious assurance. His sideways look at musical techniques and human frailty consistently provokes, teases, satisfies and delights the ear. His considerable talents as a pianist are also displayed in these first recordings by a composer of and for our time.

Called by musical historian Charles Burney "the Scotish [sic] Orpheus, the celebrated performer of old Scots tunes on the Violoncello, and maker of many more," James Oswald began his career in Edinburgh and migrated to London, where in 1761 he was appointed Chamber Composer to George III. The most original of his works, Airs for the Seasons is a collection of 48 lovely little suites grouped by seasons of the year, each bearing the title of an appropriate flower.

Alban Berg was full of contradictions -a romantic with an obsession for order, a modernist who never broke with the past, a private man who poured his inner emotions into his music.

The composer Alban Berg, 1885-1935, a pupil and associate of Schoenberg, lived in the mainstream of well-to-do Austrian. How can this doyen of Viennese respectability be reconciled with the composer who wrote the dark operas Lulu and Wozzeck. Soprano Kristine Ciesinski, who features in specially-staged extracts of Lulu and Wozzeck and sings Nacht from Seven Early Songs, travels to Vienna, Prague, the USA and Germany to investigate Berg's life.

Hugo Alfven, 1872-1960, became known as one of Sweden's principal composers of his time, together with his contemporary Wilhelm Stenhammer. This 5 CD Set contains all of Alfven's 5 Symphonies and other orchestral works, among which 3 Swedish Rhapsodies of which the first Midsommarvaka is his best-known piece.

Carl Philipp Emaunel Bach was the crucial composer in the transition between the Baroque and Classical periods, and one of the founders of the Classical style, composing in the Rococo and Classical periods. The revival of Emanuel Bach's work has been underway since Helmut Koch's rediscovery and recording of his symphonies in the 1960s.

The name of Sir John Barbirolli is perhaps most closely linked with the unorthodox combination of 20th century British composers, Mahler and Italian opera, but he brought his eloquence to a broad repertoire. Associated throughout his career with EMI, he produced the great recordings with his beloved Halle and other great orchestras.
